What To Do and Where To Stay – Fort Davis Texas

Fort Davis in the Southwest corner of Texas just near the borders of Mexico and New Mexico is one interesting town to say the least.

Now I will say this quaint little town is thr epitome of the road less travelled and in a corner of Texas that most people will never visit. But if you ever get a chance to be down South near Big Bend National Park or Marfa, TX then you owe yourself a quick trip to Fort Davis.

What To Do In Fort Davis, TX

The main attraction in this little town and the reason I even heard of it was due to the McDonald Observatory which offers what many describe as the best night sky viewings you will ever witness in this part of the world. The Observatory offers Star Parties Tuesday, Friday and Saturday all depending on weather conditions. If you get the chance to visit it is a must in my book, we unfortunately got rained out last time, but I cannot wait to go back!

This town is also a great stop for the night if you are leaving Big Bend and where doing a trip to Marfa, TX. We only spent one night in town after heading to the Prada Store Art Exhibit in Marfa and it was totally worth it. It is one of those photo opportunities you just must do! And if you can find the Target Art Exhibit as well you better post that on the gram!

Where to stay in Fort Davis, TX

We ended up staying at the Hotel Limpia in town after some last-minute searching online and loved it!

We booked Hotel Limpia very last minute when we decided to drive up from Big Bend National Park to visit the McDonald Observatory. While we did not get a chance to visit the McDonald Observatory due to a last-minute thunderstorm that brought in a good show, we enjoyed a peaceful night at Hotel Limpia with a great meal and one too many drinks.

The building was built in 1921 and I must say it has a certain charm to it that makes you fall in love. We arrived later in the evening after a day in Marfa and couldn’t have been happier with the warm welcome we got from the staff. We were given a room in the second floor and they even provided a nice extra cot since we were three people. The room was nice, clean and very comfortable for just how old this building is.

After settling in and taking a good and well-deserved shower, we explored the town a bit then headed to the hotel restaurant in the backyard porch area.

The town was overall barren when we visited even though it was a Saturday afternoon. I don’t think there is much else to do in town besides the McDonald Observatory so if you are planning on coming for that please keep an eye on the weather!

The Bistro lived up to all our expectations and we spend most of the afternoon relaxing, eating and drinking quite a bit. Due to the rain that came in we pretty much closed the bar and headed back to the main hotel lobby to play board games and drink some beers with some of the other hotel guests.
